Prime Minister Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley’s Easter Message

Today marks the start of one of the most significant and momentous events on the Christian calendar. Millions of believers all over the world, including thousands right here at home, will spend the weekend in pious contemplation and holy celebration in remembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This period marks the culmination of Lent which offered an opportunity for fervent prayer and fasting and a deep reflection on the meaning of Easter. Christians believe that Jesus’ resurrection was the decisive turning point for all creation. This glorious resurrection was only possible because of the sacrifices of Good Friday.

Christ laid down his very life for the salvation of all mankind. When he made the ultimate sacrifice, however, it did not look like victory but defeat. We know that his death was the dramatic unfolding of God’s perfect plan. Christ had to die so that through his resurrection we could all find new life.

It is my hope that our earnest reflection on this precious gift will inspire and energize us to become more compassionate and keenly aware of how our actions impact our fellow citizens. During this sacred time let us extend a helping hand to those who are in need. Let us emulate Christ’s humility and truly demonstrate what it means to love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

We live in one of the most successful multi-ethnic and multicultural societies in the world. We must guard this harmony zealously. There is no room in our country for divisive language and behaviour. We must never allow the seeds of discord to be planted here. Those who cultivate such evil, reap a veritable whirlwind of hate and damaging consequences.

It is our mutual respect for each other that will bind us together. We are one people, working together to build a stronger Trinidad and Tobago for the next generation.

As you gather with your family and friends over the four-day holiday weekend I wish you peace. On behalf of my family and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend best wishes to the Christian community and the entire nation for a holy and happy Easter 2019.
