CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF FORMER UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL KOFI ANNAN

The Government and people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago join the international community in mourning the passing of former United Nations Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Laureate, Kofi Annan and extend condolences to his family and to the United Nations.

Mr. Annan played a significant role in advancing the ideals of the United Nations through the promotion of an agenda of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.

Trinidad and Tobago not only shares the loss of Mr. Annan with the world, but particularly with the African region and the countries of the Global South. It is a source of pride that Mr. Annan was a prominent African multilateralist of Ghanaian descent who rose through the ranks of the United Nations to lead the organization for two terms from 1997 to 2006.

Kofi Annan infused his service to the world as Secretary-General of the United Nations with selfless commitment to the empowerment of all people, equality, the promotion of human rights, justice and peace. During his tenure, he met the challenges of the Office boldly, addressing the various issues and crises facing the world with diplomatic acumen and compassion, bringing to bear his experience within the United Nations system to yield the best possible outcome in every situation.

The former United Nations Secretary-General championed issues at the United Nations which are aligned with the priorities of its Member States, including Trinidad and Tobago, at the multilateral level. These priorities include peace and security, development, poverty reduction, combatting climate change, preventing the spread of infectious diseases, combatting terrorism and the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Indeed, his legacy includes agreement to the Millennium Development Goals and the United Nations’ confrontation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Mr. Annan was the definition of a true humanitarian and a global champion for peace, even as he continued his work following his retirement, with matchless dignity and determination. The international community will remember him as a true internationalist who believed in a world for all and whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Nobel Peace Laureate, champion of humanity – may he rest in peace.
