Trinidad & Tobago to Assist The Bahamas

Trinidad and Tobago will assist its CARICOM neighbour, The Bahamas, in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian.

Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley made the announcement at today’s (Thursday 5th September 2019) Post Cabinet Media Briefing at the Diplomatic Centre. Dr Rowley said after liaising with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the government of Trinidad and Tobago has agreed to provide assistance in the following ways:

1. US500,000 to assist with expenses, including the purchase of medical supplies.

2. 100 Defence Force personnel to be deployed to the islands to assist with the maintenance of law and order.

3. Seven technical personnel from T&TEC to be sent to the islands to assist with the restoration of electricity.

Dr Rowley noted, “we must do what we are able to do, even if we have, in these moments, to deprive ourselves of something that we may have otherwise consumed.”

The Category 5 hurricane severely affected the northernmost islands of The Bahamas, specifically, Abaco and Grand Bahama. Damage to the islands has been described by the Prime Minister of the Bahamas as “generational devastation”.

Dr Rowley said, as islands that are also exposed to natural disasters we are concerned for our regional brothers and sisters and show must show compassion.
