Post Cabinet Briefing Summary – Thursday 28th July, 2016

The Honourable Stuart Young, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister in the Office of the Attorney General, addressed members of the media during the Post Cabinet Press Briefing today (Thursday 28th July, 2016) at the Office of the Prime Minister, St. Clair, Port of Spain.

Minister Young announced that the Cabinet has agreed to grant a ninety-nine (99) year lease to the University of the West Indies (UWI) St Augustine for use of the former public library building in Port of Spain, corner Knox and Pembroke Streets.

The site will be used to house, on permanent exhibition, the Dr. Eric Williams memorial collection.

Dr. Williams willed a host of memorabilia to his daughter, Ms. Erica Williams-Connell, who has generously agreed to allow the items to be put on display at this new site. The memorabilia is presently housed at the Alma Jordan Library located at the UWI St. Augustine and contains books, papers and other items.

The Government is presently carrying out renovation at the new site and it will be outfitted by the UWI upon completion.

This project was first mentioned by Prime Minister Dr. Rowley during his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition as an avenue to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th independence anniversary.
